The many stories of agriculture

I am sitting here looking at the farmers’ conversations with each other on different forums about their seeds and crop protection products, and I realize that the story I thought I knew about agriculture is much more complex than I had thought. Like quite a few people I know, who fight against what is conceptualized as the universal cruelty of the large agribusiness companies against the small farmers, after watching documentaries like Food Inc., I thought that these companies had no regard at all for the farmers who bought their seed, the consumers who ate the food from that seed, or the animals raised on that seed, just to mention three important points.

But now I am looking at what the farmers in Canada, Australia, the US, Argentina, etc.  talk about how they feel about their crops and their relationships with the companies that provide their seeds, and I realize that there really are many more sides to the story of agriculture than we think. Actually, there are different stories, all interweaving to create the story we see and are told about – many fascinating stories within the story.  Hmm…
